2021 Annual Convention

Rhode Island’s current COVID-19 restrictions continue to make in-person events difficult, which means this year’s convention will once again be held online. To Register please complete the RSVP form below.

You’ll receive an email with instructions for joining the convention.

We’ll be holding the convention through Google Meet. While it’s possible to dial in on your phone, certain aspects of the meeting, including the voting process, require access to a computer.

The convention enables all LPRI members to have a say in how the party operates and we encourage all members to participate. In aid of this, we ask that members be respectful of others and mute their microphones when not speaking.

Purpose of the Convention

LPRI conducts a number of important party functions at the convention. Namely, electing Executive Committee officers, amending the party’s bylaws and platform, and endorsing candidates for public office.

Voting Eligibility

Anyone wishing to vote for officers or to run as an officer must be a dues-paying member of LPRI for at least 30 days prior to the convention.

Executive Committee Officer Elections

This year, we’ll be holding three officer elections. Positions up for election are:

1. Chair (two-year term)
2. Secretary (two-year term)
3. At-Large (one-year term)

Officer elections will occur towards the end of convention. Anyone eligible to run for an open position may declare their candidacy at that time and should be prepared to give a brief statement making the case for why he or she should be elected.

Amendments to the Bylaws

LPRI’s bylaws can be amended by a two-thirds majority vote at the convention. All dues-paying LPRI members can submit proposed bylaw amendments. The text of bylaw amendment proposals must be made available to members at least 21 days prior to the convention. This year, there are no proposed changes to the bylaws to be voted on.

Amendments to the Platform/Statement of Principles

LPRI’s platform can only be amended at the convention. Planks and amendments to planks must be passed by a two-thirds majority vote. Platform planks can be deleted by a simple majority vote of all registered delegates at a convention. Proposed amendments to the platform that will be voted on at this year’s convention include:

Endorsements

Candidates running for public office looking for the endorsement of LPRI are nominated at the convention in the year preceding their election and pass by a simple majority vote. Candidates seeking endorsements must be dues-paying members of LPRI at least 30 days prior to the convention. Those seeking endorsement should know the LPRI does not endorse fusion or cross-party candidates.

If you’re not currently a member, you’re not eligible to vote, run for office, or seek endorsement at this year’s convention. But, if you’re interested in doing any of these things at next year’s convention, it’s worth signing up to become a member today. LPRI members can also call a special convention with 30 days notice.
